The preface starts with Jacob Boehme’s (1575–1624) discussion of the two natures of the universe (good and evil). As the selection proceeds, Boehme states that the source of knowledge of God and the Spirit is the good nature of the universe.

Määrä

He contrasts his simple and unlearned account with that of the learned, who, as he theorizes, will scorn his work. Boehme, a shoemaker from Görlitz, was indeed attacked by orthodox theologians. Nonetheless, he had a far-reaching and lasting influence on German theosophy and (later) Romanticism. Boehme claimed divine illumination as the source of his knowledge of the mysteries of the universe.
